The debate on the safety of parabens in cosmetics has been going on for years.

The European Commission (EU) has decided to strictly regulate the use of parabens in cosmetics. They have notified World Trade Organization (WTO) their intention about a ban of 5 parabens (isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, phenylparaben, pentylparaben, benzylparaben, benzyl esters of 4-hydroxybenzoic and their salts).

The ban will be effective in February 2014 according to recent reports.

Although these 5 parabens are not widely used, EU’s decision demonstrates an important change of their view with regards to the safety of parabens that are  considered to be estrogenic and endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Further, EU has declared to lower  maximum usable concentration of  butyl-and propylparaben, which is endocrine distrupting chemicals and more commonly used in various products.

EU proposes to completely prohibit the use of butyl and propylparaben in leave-on cosmetics designed to be used on the nappy area as well as in cosmetics or care products that are intended for children under three-years old.

The current decision of EU on these 2 parabens reflects the ban of butyl- and propylparaben use in all cosmetics for children by Denmark in 2011.
