Yuksek pH’a (pH 9-11) sahip bazik sabunla yıkanan cildin normal pH 5.5 olan düzeyi pH7.2 yükselmiştir. Fakat pH 5.5 ila 7 düzeyine sahip cilt temizleme ürünleri kullandığında cilt pH’ ında sadece 0.8 lik bir yükselme tesbit edilmiştir [1]. Bu çalışma sabun pH’ının cildin normal parametrelerini nasıl etkileyebildiğini gsteren güzel bir örnek.
Yüksek bazik pH’a sahip sabunla yüzün yıkanması cilt yüzeyindeki doğal yağ tabakasını çözer.

Her dört kadından sadece birinin kullandığı ürünlerin son kullanma tarihine dikkat ettiğini biliyor muydunuz?

Some products even though they are so expensive and widely advertised, they not do the trick on our face. Sometimes their formula could have harsh ingredients. Based on my personal experience- having an oily skin provides you with many opportunities- here is my list of no-no skin care products in our daily skin care regimen
1-Soap to wash the face:
Soap could be really expensive, moisturizing or even produced by a world renown brand but washing your face with soap is the worst thing you can do. So soap gets into my no-no list from #1.
Here is why. Syndet or naturally made soap has a high basic pH between 9 to 11. The natural pH of our skin is around 5.5. Studies showed that when skin is washed with regular soap the pH of the skin went from 5.5 to 7.2. On the other hand , when facial cleansers with a pH between 5.5 to 7 was used, the skin pH only increased 0.8[1].
Using soap with high pH irritates the physiological barrier on the skin, disturbs the natural bacterial flora as well as the enymatic activity on top epidermis. Soap dissolves the natural oils and lips on the skin thus decreasing the moisture levels and increasing dryness. Change in skin’s pH could also enhance bacterial irritations and acne formation [2].
Think skin like a water-dependent organism. Without water the skin will loose its moisture, wither, look dull and unhealthy. For a healthy and moisturized skin do not use soap for cleaning your face. Please use SLS-free facial cleansing gels or lotions suitable for your skin type. The pH of these products are adjusted to pH5.5-7 which is compatible with pH of the skin.
2-Toners with Alcohol:
There are still some toners with alcohol in their formula. The alcohol is listed as denatured alcohol of SD alcohol in the ingredient list. Although alcohol based toners provide a tight and clean feeling to your skin, it is a short time effect. In the long run they are not the most favorable product. The alcohol in toners dissolve the natural oils (sebum and lipids) and absorb the water of the skin. Decreased sebum could result in dryness, extreme oil production, dull skin and dead cells on the surface. Further, imbalance of sebum levels could also favor bacterial growth as well as increased acne.
Instead of using alcohol based toners, prefer alcohol-free toners for your skin. Alcohol free toners will also get rid of drying chlorine and other minerals in the tap water from your skin. Skin calming ingredients such as aloe vera, plant oils or extracts will also help the skin to rejuvenate and properly moisturized.
3- Cleansers with SLS:
Many of the facial cleanser, shampoos and similar products may have cleansing detergent SLS in their formula. The SLS is listed as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) in the ingredient list. Studies demonstrated that the use of 0.5%ile 10% Sodium Lauryl Sulfate resulted in slight to moderate irritation. The increased level of 10%-30% SLS lead to skin corrosion and severe irritation [3]. SLS strips oil of the skin, which could increase dryness. Another study showed that SLS modulated irritation persisted in research subjects for 3 weeks [4].

4- Eye creams with mineral oil or high levels of oil:
Due to the lack of oil glands around the eyes, most of the eye creams are formulated with mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin or high density oils to provide moisture. Using eye creams at night with these oils or applying it wrong to the eye area could result in these oils getting into the eye causing the swelling of the delicate eye and the skin around. Repeated swelling over time could result in altering the elasticity of the skin. Loss of elasticity could cause wrinkles around the eye. Creams with high oil content could also enhance the milia formation around the eyes. To provide the much needed moisture choose oil-free eye gels or eye creams without these ingredients.
5-Expired Beauty Products:
Did you know one out of four women pays attention to expiration dates of the products they use? At this point, would you eat a cookie or a steak gone bad? Why use expired products on our skin?
Every cosmetic product have a PAO symbol which stands for period after opening. This shows how long you can use a certain product after you open it.
Pay attention to production and/or expiration dates if it is available on the packaging. If not, follow the recommended PAO for the item. After expiration the makeup or skin care products could have bacterial growth and the cosmetic actives (i.e. anti-aging ingredients) may loose its effect.
What are the average PAO for cosmetics?
Each product will have its own PAO determined by the manufacturer. The PAO ‘s will change according to the formulation and ingredients of the products. For instance a cream with 5% botanical ingredients may last longer than natural /organic products. Make sure to check the expiration date and PAO and do not use it after recommended date.
