Peeling or exfoliation? What are they?

Onur asks: “My first question is about exfoliants. It is said that exfoliants with granules are harmful to the skin and that we should use ones without granules, which confuses me. So far, I have always used fine-grained, non-irritating exfoliants. Which do you recommend? Granule-free ones are more expensive, too.”

First, let’s start with exfoliants. The concept of exfoliation is somewhat misunderstood in Turkey. Exfoliation means removing dead skin cells, but it can be done with granules through exfoliation or scrubbing. Both have their own place. Exfoliants with granules are used for exfoliation, scrubbing, and even microdermabrasion, which are methods to mechanically remove dead cells from the skin’s surface. Normally, the skin naturally sheds dead cells from the surface. Exfoliation speeds up this process and accelerates the skin renewal cycle.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation not only removes dead cells from the surface but also revitalizes the skin and increases oxygen supply to the skin. Additionally, it reduces hyperpigmentation. Depending on the skin type, you can exfoliate once or twice a week. I am strongly against excessive exfoliation. Everything should be done in moderation.

I definitely recommend using lukewarm water with exfoliation. This process should be done at night, and makeup should not be applied immediately afterward. The skin needs to be left to rest and relax.

Exfoliation

Exfoliate

If you are exfoliating twice a week, do not do it on consecutive days. There should be at least a 3-day gap in between so that the skin cells can renew and complete their cycle.

I do not personally recommend exfoliation for acne-prone, wounded, or very sensitive skin.

You should pay attention to the exfoliating ingredients in the product. Avoid products containing hard shell-like substances such as walnut shells. It is better for the health of your skin to choose ingredients that gently exfoliate the skin.

Furthermore, exfoliation helps to remove the accumulated dead cells on the outer layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum. As you age, the cell turnover slows down, reducing the accumulation on the skin surface. The frequency of exfoliation should be adjusted according to age and skin type.

Now, let’s talk about granule-free exfoliants. I won’t delve into chemical peels done at home; that is a completely different story and should be done by a professional. However, there is the method of applying a gel-type mask and peeling it off after it dries. That is what I mean by peeling. It helps in deep cleansing of the pores. As you can see, both have different functions.
