Celiac Disease and Makeup Products

Celiac disease involves the immune system overreacting to gluten, which can lead to stomach cramps, bloating, chronic diarrhea, and in very sensitive patients, even damage to the villi in the small intestine that affects nutrient absorption.

Some celiac patients can have reactions to trace amounts of gluten in their makeup products due to their extreme sensitivity to gluten. This does not mean that every celiac patient will react the same way, as each person’s immune system is different.

Experts believe that gluten cannot be directly absorbed through the skin. However, the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness notes that some celiac patients may experience symptoms from products like lipstick or moisturizer containing trace amounts of gluten if they are ingested. Considering that an average woman ingests nearly 2 kg of lipstick over her lifetime, the situation becomes more interesting.

In a recently published scientific study, four lip products and two lotions containing gluten were examined. Researchers found that the gluten content in these products was below measurable levels.

A question that comes to mind is whether using multiple products containing trace amounts of gluten at the same time could raise the gluten level above measurable levels and affect the person. There is no research on this topic yet.

In summary, individuals who want to avoid gluten in cosmetics or personal care products should steer clear of items that may be contaminated with wheat (Triticum vulgare), barley (Hordeum vulgare), malt, oat (Avena sativa), and rye (Secale cereale).

Besides this, there are wonderful blogs by celiac individuals.

It’s also important to consider that sometimes you might experience discomfort even if the products you use do not list gluten ingredients or state “gluten-free.” This could be due to cross-contamination during production or with other product ingredients.

Ultimately, it is up to you to carefully read and research the ingredients and make informed decisions.
